Firex 4618 AC Smoke Alarm with Battery Back-up and False Alarm Control

Amazon.com Product Description

Untitled Document

The Firex i4618 Hardwire Smoke Alarm by Kidde is an ionization smoke alarm that operates on a 120V power source with 9V battery backup. The Firex i4618 smoke alarm offers many benefits for installers and homeowners, such as its easy-access slide load front battery door.

This alarm is powered by your home’s electricity and will interconnect with other smoke alarms in your home. Experts recommend interconnected alarms, because when one sounds, they all sound, providing an early warning against fire by dramatically increasing your ability to hear an alarm anywhere in your home, regardless of where the fire starts.

This alarm uses ionization sensing technology. Ionization sensing alarms may detect invisible fire particles (associated with flaming fires) sooner than photoelectric alarms. Photoelectric sensing alarms may detect visible particles (associated with smoldering fires) sooner than ionization alarms. Kidde strongly recommends that both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms be installed to help insure maximum detection of the various types of fire that can occur within the home.

  • Easy access front loading battery door.

Interconnectable for Improved Safety
Fire and consumer experts recommend interconnected alarms for added protection. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), most Americans feel they are more at risk of being a victim of a tornado than of a house fire. Actually the opposite is true. Fires are more common than any other disaster that strikes a family at home, and can become deadly in minutes.

You have on average less than three minutes from the time you hear a smoke alarm to escape a fire. The sooner you hear an alarm, the sooner you can get out safely. Smoke alarms that link together so that when one goes off, they all go off, are called interconnected alarms. These alarms provide more warnings in more places, giving your family more time to escape a house fire. Houses built after 1993 are required by building codes to have interconnected alarms that are wired into their electrical system.

Interconnects with Other Devices
Interconnects with all Kidde, Firex, Fyrnetics, Lifesaver and Nighthawk alarms, strobe lights, and relay modules with interconnect functionality.

Trademarked Hush Feature for Convenience
By pressing the Hush button, you can easily and safely silence nuisance alarms caused by non-emergency situations, such as overcooked dinners.

This alarm's Smart Hush feature has the capability of temporarily desensitizing the alarm circuit for up to 8 minutes. This feature is to be used only when a known alarm condition, such as smoke from cooking, activates the alarm. The smoke alarm is desensitized by pushing the Test/Hush button on the smoke alarm cover. If the smoke is not too dense, the alarm will silence immediately. The red LED will illuminate for 1.5 seconds every 8 seconds while in hush. This indicates that the alarm is in a temporarily desensitized condition. The smoke alarm will automatically reset after approximately 8 minutes and sound the alarm if particles of combustion are still present. Smart Hush can be used repeatedly until the air has been cleared of the condition causing the alarm. Pushing the Test/Hush button on the alarm will end the hush period.

Reliable 9-Volt Battery Backup, Indicator LED, and Test Feature
Because a smoke alarm only helps protect you if it's working, this unit features a red LED that flashes every 30 to 40 seconds to indicate that it is operating correctly. For additional peace of mind, the alarm also contains a test/reset button that enables you to periodically test its circuitry and horn.

The alarm’s standard 9-volt battery provides continuous protection against smoke and fire hazards, even during power outages. The unit offers a low battery warning that issues a brief chirp every 30 to 40 seconds for at least seven days before losing power, letting you know that it's time to change the battery.

The unit measures just 5.6 inches in diameter and 1.8 inches deep, and it features a neutral, white finish. It includes tamper resist features to deter vandalism or theft.

This alarm is UL listed, so you can be confident of its quality, and it is backed by a 5-year limited warranty.

1.0 out of 5 stars A terrible protection device..., June 6, 2009
By
This review is from: Firex/Kidde 4618 Hardwire Ionization Smoke Alarm with Battery Backup (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have used smoke detectors for over 40 years. This device and the device that it replaced, the ADC, are among the worst I have ever encountered. I recently replaced all seven ADC devices after only 3 years because of the high false alarm rates they exhibited. And I find it totally amazing that they ONLY false alarmed in the middle of the night (go figure). After installing 7 brand new FADC devices series 4618 AND checking EVERY battery that came with every device, I went away for a week. When I returned one of the devices was beeping 3 times every 30 minutes. There is nothing in the instructions or in the FAQ section of the Firex web site that addresses this. I removed the detector and replaced it with the #8 (spare) that I had purchased. It still beeps every 30 minutes. After removing the detector completely a different detector beeped 3 times. I will NEVER buy another Firex smoke detector.
PS the only star they got was for price.

1.0 out of 5 stars Product from Hell, March 19, 2010

This review is from: Firex/Kidde 4618 Hardwire Ionization Smoke Alarm with Battery Backup (Tools & Home Improvement)
Our Firex FADC 4618 smoke detectors have been waking us up with ear-piercing false alarms in the middle of the night every two or three months since our house was built three years ago. The installing electrician has inspected them twice. We have vacuumed and changed batteries. We curse the company every time. We are exasperated.

1.0 out of 5 stars Firex FADC - very poor product, October 7, 2009

I purchased one of these less than 3 years ago for our upstairs guest area because I was told that an ionization detector is less prone to false alarms. This model emits frequent false alarms, even after cleaning and battery replacement, and I was ready to throw it out. I contacted Kidde and they said they would replace it free with a different model since it has a 5-year warranty. Hopefully the replacement will be a better product.

Features

The Kidde i12060 smoke alarm offers a tamper-resistant feature to deter vandalism or theft and a smart interconnect system that connects with up to 24 Kidde devices--including other smoke alarms plus carbon monoxide and heat alarms. The battery-backup feature (9-volt battery included) provides protection even during power outages, when many CO incidences occur. The front-loading battery door allows users to change the battery without removing the alarm from the mounting bracket, making battery replacement easy and convenient. It has a large mounting base that helps protect surface paint from dirt and covers imperfections, and its pre-stripped wiring harness has an easy-off cap and tinned strands to increase conductivity.

By pressing the hush button, you can easily and safely silence nuisance alarms caused by non-emergency situations, such as overcooked dinners. This feature desensitizes the alarm for approximately seven minutes. During this time, the alarm chirps every 30 to 40 seconds. If the smoke is too dense, the hush feature is overridden and the alarm still sounds, and the alarm automatically resets at the end of the seven minutes. This convenient safety measure eliminates the temptation to remove the alarm's battery, which creates an unsafe situation.

The Kidde i12060 smoke alarm uses ionization sensing technology, which may detect invisible fire particles (associated with flaming fires) sooner than photoelectric alarms. Photoelectric sensing alarms may detect visible particles (associated with smoldering fires) sooner than ionization alarms. Kidde recommends that both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms be installed to insure maximum detection.

1.0 out of 5 stars False alarms, March 9, 2010
This review is from: Kidde i12060 Hardwire with Front Load Battery Backup Smoke Alarm (Tools & Home Improvement)
Less than a year ago, I replaced all the smoke detectors in my home with the Kidde i12060. They go off for no reason- we dont smoke, and cooking doesnt set them off. They just go bad. I checked the batteries- they are still good. I am so tired of the false alarms that I am going to replace them all with a different brand. I see that these have good ratings from others, but I just wanted to share my bad experiance so that you are forewarned.

Kidde AC Wire-In with Battery Backup Smoke Alarm #i12060

These alarms are powered primarily by your house wiring, and if power fails, by a 9v battery. If you only have one alarm, you only need a hot & neutral (black & white wires, plus ground) in a ceiling box. To interconnect two or more alarms, you'll need 14/3 or 12/3 cable (black, white, red, and a ground wire) from the first alarm to the last. The included quick connect wiring harness's female jack has black, white, & red pigtails that connect to your house wiring. The pigtail's jack connects to the back of the alarm, so it's easy to remove or replace an alarm if needed. If an alarm in the "system" is activated, the red wire goes hot from that alarm, activating all interconnected alarms. There are 5 interconnected alarms in a house we're remodeling, and when set off (as a test), it's ear-splitting racket, designed to wake you from a deep sleep.

If your house has 14/2 or 12/2 wire (versus 3 conductor) to the... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars false alarms, June 16, 2010
This review is from: Kidde i12060 Hardwire with Front Load Battery Backup Smoke Alarm (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have five of these in my home. About a year ago I replaced them all due to random false alarms (they were about 8 years old). Since then I've had to replace two of the new ones due to false alarms. I'm pulling them all out and replacing with another brand. Quality on these is extremely poor.
